4-steps to a better you

Always feeling unwell but can't quite put your finger on it? Full of varying symptoms but nothing concrete and diagnosable, or perhaps you have been diagnosed with one of today's ever increasing ailments like depression, anxiety, hypertensive, diabetes, poor digestion or even lactose, gluten or wheat sensitivities.

Welcome to the modern world. It's full of stresses, chemically processed foods and hostile environments.

It's shocking how quickly the increase in these ailments have become over the course of just a few short years. No doubt, one should look at the way we live for clues as to how we feel in both body and mind.

WHY should you LISTEN to what I have to SAY?

I write this to share my own personal experiences. It has been a long struggle for many years trying many different ways to get to where I am now and still going. I hope that this information can help anybody out there willing and wanting to change their lives.

Through my efforts over the course of about fifteen years, I have seen a broad spectrum of medical professionals, spiritual helpers and holistic healers. I'm now in my early thirties and feel that I have wasted half my life trying to get well and feel good. So I hope my findings can help you or someone you care about, or at the very least, make you think and question how you live your life.

Step ONE:

Breathe...

Do not dismiss this all important life function. Many an ailment is caused or aggravated due to lack of, or incorrect breathing. This obvious observation is that we need oxygen to survive. It feeds and fuels us and is the essence of being alive.

Many of use breathe too shallow, this restricts oxygen from getting to the brain causing poor circulation as well as–hypertension. This all leads to depression, cold hands and feet, pins and needles in your feet and fingers and can negatively influence digestion, concentration, nutrient uptake, energy levels and so much more. The point here is: BREATHE!

If you catch yourself holding your breath, stop for a second and breathe deeply. Same goes for shallow breathing, check yourself by being aware and correct yourself if need be.

A healthy way to breathe is to inhale through the nose and breathe deeply into the pit of your stomach. Visualize the clean pure air reaching all your extremities. Exhale through the nose or mouth visualizing the removal of dirty gray air.

Practice this technique consciously and with intent and soon it will become habit forming and part of your good health everyday living practice.

Step TWO:

Positive Affirmations...

It has been proven that words do affect our lives. There is a lot of research and discovery on this topic, just look at how music and lyrics manipulate sand particles and water molecules. Spoken words are vibrations. That is why negative words can hurt us and positive words can make us feel on top of the world.

By incorporating positive affirmations into our lives we help build positive neuro pathways in our brains - ultimately - reprogramming our thoughts. Why do we want to do this? Well, for starters, we have been doing this all our lives on a subconscious level. For most of us, our negative thoughts have become realised. It's like that saying "careful what you wish for" and "be mindful of your thoughts".

Keep thinking you are depressed, and soon you will be. Keep thinking you are worthless, and so you have become. We developed these negative thinking patterns from early life due to our upbringings. Some may argue that they had a wonderful upbringing, yet society still influenced your development.

We tend to bury these experiences deep within and take them with us into adulthood. They sit there and manipulate our lives without us realizing how or why. Constantly we wonder why our lives aren't as magical as we had hoped and dreamed.

Time to override those negative pathways and start working on a new and better minded you.

A good way to incorporate positive affirmations into your life is to focus on the task at hand and to counter all negative thoughts immediately. For example, if you are feeling uninspired, stop telling yourself that you feel this way and start telling yourself that 'inspiration is all around me and is part of who I am. I feel inspired!'.

Another helpful way to incorporate positive affirmations into your life is to have them in plain sight. Write them on a post-it-note and place them on your bathroom mirror, fridge, cupboard door or anywhere you will see it. This will help bring positive thought into your everyday life.

Stop thinking that you can't and start thinking that you can. Stop worrying, let go, be free and all will be well.

Step THREE:

Eating basics…

You can't have one without the other. A healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand to create balance.

You can go as far as counting calories, noting nutrition and weighing all your foods. For some this is the way to go to have control and knowledge about what you are consuming. For others, understandably, this is too much effort and time consuming.

There are several programs and websites that can help you keep a journal of your intake, at least this is a good way to go in the beginning until it becomes second nature. Or simply keep a written journal or diary keeping track of what you ate so that you can refer back to it if needed or have a nutritionist look over it.

Calorie and nutrient intake checking is not just for people who want to lose weight, gain weight or have a professional sport career or even people with dietary restrictions. Our bodies are vehicles that require fuel. Not just any fuel. Yes, you probably can survive on anything but can you live? Many ill-like symptoms we experience are due to lack of correct eating. Tried, bloated, heartburn, lack of energy…all related to incorrect eating patterns.

Our bodies require daily building blocks and nutrients to be able to function. Feed yourself well, and your body will feel better for it.

The best way to do this is to find out what you need then to aim for it. Always make the smart choice when it comes to choosing meals. Choose healthy, chose fresh and raw and remember that it's all your choice. Don't live on take-out food then complain about your heartburn and sluggish digestion or lack of energy.

Do some research and change the way you eat. Don't underestimate the power of food. It's a way of life.

Step FOUR:

Go for walks…

It's a scary word for most – exercise. You can't escape it because it's a vital ingredient to good health both mentally and physically.

Walking has many benefits such as promoting good mental health, feeling good and getting fit. It is easy to do, almost effortless and one should try to walk at least for 30 minutes, three times a week. For optimal results, try walk in a park or somewhere outdoors, just be safe and always be aware of your surroundings.

Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car far away from the shopping mall entrance. Make the healthy choice and choose to walk whenever possible.

Walking also promotes good breathing so it takes us back to step one - full circle.

In Summary:

Be conscious of your breathing.
Think and talk on a positive note, always.
Eat healthy, make healthy eating choices every day!
Go for walks, choose walking whenever possible.

Most importantly, listen to your body. It is sending you information and signals all the time. It knows what it needs, what is good for it and what is not. If one learns to listen, you become a more wiser and intuitive being.

There is a lot more information on all these steps and within them, plenty more topics to discover and research. I have just covered the basics of basics here. Follow you heart, do what's right for you and always make the healthier choice. Why? Who doesn't want to feel good, be positive and have a great and joyful life!

It has also been my experience that when one is happy, you attract happiness. Cause and effect.
